Art Appreciation and Developing Visual Literacy
Have you ever been curious about art? Don't get it or wish you had time to learn more?
Art is a universal language that transcends boundaries, cultures, and time. It invites us to see the world through different perspectives and inspires creativity in our everyday lives. From the vibrant colors of a painting to the intricate details of a sculpture, art has the power to evoke emotions and provoke thought. In this exploration, we delve into various forms of art, including visual arts, performing arts, and digital creations, each offering unique insights into the human experience. Visual arts, such as painting and photography, allow artists to express their inner visions, while performing arts, including theater and dance, bring stories to life through movement and performance.
Enhance your ability to interpret and engage with art through fundamental concepts and practical exercises. Learn to see beyond the surface and understand the deeper meanings in artistic expressions.

Art Tools for Everyday Use
Experience the transformative power of art!
This course delves into art's capacity to drive social change, foster personal growth, and evoke powerful emotions, providing a new perspective on its impact.
Historical, cultural, and personal
transformation.
Experience how art can inspire, challenge, and heal. This interactive course introduces art strategies as tools for grounding, connecting, disconnecting, reflecting, and opening one’s own creative potentials. We will take a hands-on approach as we work through select art methods used to appreciate the small things in the everyday, recognize our sublime placement, and be given the opportunity to unlock the subconscious, if desired. Allowing for a free-flowing process rather than following steps to produce a specific outcome, reflexively experiencing a process for the sake of that process rather than a means to an end, unlocks a world of possibilities.

This course contains exclusive interviews (in English or with translation provided) with Spanish artists that were recorded specifically for this course on scene in Spain: coffee chats, wine sips, perhaps a tapa para picar, city walks filled with diverse architecture and the stories that accompany them as told by locals, museum visits, studio visits, a house visit in the casa of Dalí, wild stories about Goya, and much more. Students will get a fresh (and sometimes hidden) perspective on well-known artists, explore the architectural trends through storytelling, as well as be introduced to the contemporary art scene, including a thriving culture of art, music, and dance (flamenco!). ¡Olé! Studio Ghibli
An in-depth binge on Studio Ghibli: From start to finish(?)
Did you know that Miyazaki Hayao does not use a script? So how does a Studio Ghibli film come to be? And what makes these films so captivating?
In this course, we will look at the roles of producers and directors in animated films and how these roles differ in Studio Ghibli versus Western studio productions. Within Studio Ghibli, we will explore common themes, elements of Japanese myth and culture threaded throughout the storylines and signature styles of the directors. Not-so-much-a-spoiler alert: Miyazaki Hayao (1941), Takahata Isao (1935) and Suzuki Toshio (1948) “desired artistic freedom, unhindered by external studio pressures,” so they founded their own studio: Studio Ghibli, 1985 to present.
Immerse yourself in the magical world of Studio Ghibli. Analyze the storytelling, animation techniques, and profound themes that make their films timeless classics, fostering a deeper appreciation for this art form.
