Art Tools to Unlock the Subconscious!

Art has always been a powerful medium for expressing thoughts and emotions, but the movements of Dada and Surrealism take this a step further by delving into the subconscious mind.

To truly learn about and utilize art tools that can help you unlock this deeper part of your creativity, it’s essential to understand the principles behind these movements. Dada arose in the early 20th century as a reaction against the traditional values of art, embracing chaos and absurdity. Surrealism followed, aiming to tap into the unconscious mind and reveal the hidden layers of human experience. By incorporating various art tools—such as collage, automatic drawing, and even digital platforms—you can experiment with your own subconscious.

Embrace the unexpected, and don’t shy away from the absurd; allow your art to reflect the complexities of your thoughts and feelings.

By learning about and utilizing these art tools, you can unlock your subconscious and create works that resonate on a deeper level, much like the pioneers of Dada and Surrealism.

Contemporary Art of Japan

This course is an introduction to modern and contemporary art practices in Japan from the late 1800s to the present. We will look at a variety of Japanese artists and innovative art forms (traditional fine arts, as well as extended art forms) that are representative of the diverse landscape of global art practices today. This course emphasizes the intersection of art and culture, discussing the works of internationally established artists, as well as investigating a younger generation of artists. Comparisons are continually made between traditional Japanese practices and different facets of contemporary Japanese society. Students identify and interpret the way the arts, ritual, religion, power, and nationalism are manifest within a particular aesthetic and cultural system.
